1. Set the whole group a scenario that they will all be familiar with, such as 'how do you get to the fish and chip shop?'
2. Put everyone into pairs or small groups.
3. Each group to select who is going to provide the directions and who is going to ask for them.
4. The teacher writes on the board the way in which the person asking needs to communicate, this can include speaking a foreign language, being a young child, being hard of hearing, being elderly etc.
5, All groups take a turn at trying to provide and listen to the instructions.
6. Swap the roles over.
This is much harder than it sounds, and requires the young people to think creatively about ways in which they can communicate other than using their voice.
