Sherborne Developmental Movement

Many children and young people with a physical or mental disability often have difficulties interpreting how their body feels, where their body is in space and the movements of others.  Sherborne Developmental Movement (SDM) is a great strategy for developing understanding of our bodies, building self-esteems and working with others.
In my early years class I liked to incorporate (SDM) into my PE sessions.  Many of the children I work with have little awareness of their bodies, how to move them and how to work within their personal space or in larger spaces such as the classroom or playground.
This article http://www.sherbornemovementuk.org/uploads/5/1/4/2/5142236/sherborne_for_students_with_pmld.pdf has some great tips for the different SDM activities to develop awareness of different areas of the body such as the trunk, legs, arms etc.

Just ensure that all the adults who are working with the children feel able and confident to take part in the activities and then have fun developing movement!
