Understanding Autism From ‘The Inside Out’

Kate and I recently attended a talk hosted by CRAE (Centre for Research in Autism and Education) by the brilliant Emily Rubin, a speech pathologist and co-author of SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Supports).  She reminded me again of the importance of understanding autism from ‘the inside out’.  In other words understanding what is happening in the brain and sensory system of the person with autism can enable us a practioners to ‘aid the fulfilment of every child’s promise’ (Prizant B, Uniquely Human).
Emily also signposted us to Barry Prizant’s book ‘Uniquely Human’.  This accessible book draws on Dr Prizant’s extensive experience of working with young people and adults with autism and their families to really help us think about seeing autism in a different way.

So if you’re looking for an inspiring book to support you to understand the young person with autism you are working with I would highly recommend having a read of ‘Uniquely Human’.
