Barriers To Learning

I delivered a lecture at IOE a few weeks ago, and as part of it we considered barriers to learning. When I googled this some really interesting images and statistics appeared.

I asked the participants what their experience of barriers to learning were to the children and young people that they supported, and how they supported teachers to overcome these.

What is interesting, is that we came to this from an SEN focus, yet actually, considering this has an impact on all our learners.

Ideas included

  • magic breakfast
  • social model of disability
  • flexible homework policies (i.e, if the home is overcrowded and the child does not have space to do work, not to punish but to find solutions)
  • Approachable staff
  • acceptance of difference
  • whole school assemblies around disability and difference

What do barriers to  learning look like in your setting? Do you have any suggestions to add to the list? @wearetheSENco
