Play Dough Squash!

Learning Objective

P4 Pupils show awareness of changes in shape

Additional Skills

Tactile – experiencing the texture of play dough
Visual – noticing changes and differences
Kinaesthetic – movement of squashing the play dough
Fine motor – rolling the play dough into different shapes

Resources

Large laminated shapes
Shape symbols
Play dough
Slinky type plastic springs

Main

Adult models rolling play dough into a ball.
Child rolls play dough into a ball.
Child chooses shape.
Child squashes the play dough until all the shape is covered.
Adult support child to choose symbol to identify shape they have made.
Re-roll play dough into a ball and repeat with another shape.

Plenary

Adult hold up shape symbols and child matches to large laminated shapes.

Consolidation Activities

In a small group inside, or outside on the playground encourage the child with a small group of children to play with slinkys; noticing the way they change shape when moved differently, what shapes can you make with them?
