Firework Frenzy!!

With fireworks night on the horizon I thought it would be fun to share an idea for attention autism stage 2 that encompasses the fun of fireworks and can be  used to teach a variety of different concepts.

Resources:
Shower curtain
Black paper
Party poppers
Several different colours of glitter

Activity:
  • Lay out the shower curtain on the floor.
  • Place at least 2 pieces of black paper on the shower curtain.
  • Place the party poppers on the paper, counting as you go.
  • Show the group the different colour glitter, naming each one as you go.
  • Choose a glitter and a party popper.
  • Place some glitter on the bottom of the party popper and countdown “5,4,3,2,1” pull the party popper and watch the glitter fall on the paper like a firework!
  • Repeat until all the glitter colours and the party poppers have been used.

This activity could also be used to celebrate Diwali, the festival of light.  Place glue on the black paper before using the party poppers and use the glittered (is glitter a verb?? I feel in our profession it should be!!) paper in a Diwali display or for mark making on with paint or wax crayons.

Another great time to use this activity is on the first day of term of term in January to celebrate the New Year together.  Watch some of the New Years fireworks on the interactive whiteboard and when Big Ben chimes in the New Year use fireworks frenzy to celebrate together!

Watch this activity in action here!
And check out some symbol resources that will support your teaching!

Enjoy and happy fireworks night!
