Multi-Sensory Child Led Learning

I was recently reading a book with a child who started to show a real interest in the duck in the story, she kept pointing and trying to verbalise the word. So to follow this up I decided to set up some multi sensory play to persue her interest!

When setting up multi sensory play I aim to enagage as many of the 'traditional' senses as possible such as touch, smell, taste, hearing, vision as well as engaging other sensory systems such as the vestibular and proprioceptive system.

For our duck play I set up the following:
Tactile (touch) : a bobbly rug for the pond, different textured ducks, bubbles or water spray for the water
Olfactory (smell) : a spritz of neals yard organic hand spray that has a gorgeous floral smell to represent being outdoors surrounded by flowers
Aural (hearing) : a sound book, you could also play sounds of the park in the background while the child plays
Visual: use of blue scarf to create water affect on top of the rug, a range of tactile books with duck images, bubbles
Gustatory (taste) : Oats and chia seeds to feed the ducks!
Vestibular: a textured cushion to sit or lie on for core and balance practice

Add visual supports to enhance the child's understanding and learning.

The child engaged with the play for about 15 minutes and really explored all the difference aspects, being super excited to point to all the duck toys and hear me say the word!

To follow this up we're off to the local park to find and feed the ducks :)
