What Goes In My Bucket?

Attention Autism is a brilliant 'tool' in your SEND tool kit. I call it a tool, as when working with children with learning differences, we need to have many strategies that we feel confident in using, as a one size fits all approach just doesn't work. There are lots of videos and resources on Attention Autism that you can look at, Gina Davis who coined the term 'attention autism' has a great Facebook page full of new ideas and resources. We have also made some videos to suggest some ideas as to how you can incorporate maths content into the sessions. But, how to keep stage 1: The Bucket! fresh and exciting for your students. Here are some of my favourite resources that the children cannot wait to be pulled out! All of them can be found on amazon.

Halloween Special: Attention Autism Stage 2

Looking for some seasonal classroom ideas for your bucket sessions? Here is another of our favourites- Reveal! For a better result than I got, use glue and a paintbrush and then it really will be a surprise. You could follow this up by playing the ‘Skeleton Dance’ song (YouTube this) or reading Funny Bones. A nice art activity is using art straws to make skeletons. You could also set up a role play hospital. If you are lucky enough to know anyone that works in a hospital, you could ask them for old X-Rays they don’t need (a colleague once did this, the children loved it!) and then set up a light box so they can explore the bones! Colourful Semantics

The Very Hungry Caterpillar book is just brilliant for so many reasons. Key phrases are repeated throughout, the lifecycle of a butterfly, sequencing numbers and days of the week, healthy foods...the list is endless. I am teaching a small class each afternoon and the children have really varying levels of communication and understanding. My aim was to begin developing 4 key word sentences to begin teaching sentence structure and increasing vocabulary.
