Every year I try to think of new ways to support children to
make Christmas cards for their friends and families as independently as
possible so that their work can be on display around school and in people’s
homes. ‘Star Shine’ is one of my
favourite and works great as an Attention Autism stage 2 activity and then as
an independent table top activity:
Resources:
PVA glue
Glitter
Star shaped cookie cutter
Black A4 card
2 Trays
Activity:
- Place the black paper on the floor or table.
- Pour some PVA glue into one of the trays.
- Dip the star shaped cookie cutter in the glue and then make start shapes on the black card (you can count how many you make as you go to add some counting skills).
- Shake glitter all over the card.
- Tip the glitter off the card into the other tray.
- Show the children the glittering stars and sing ‘Twinkle twinkle little star’.
- Support the children to copy the activity at the table to make their own Christmas cards!
Other shaped cookie cutters such as trees, stockings etc.
could also be used. If you are exploring
‘big’ and ‘small’ use different size cookie cutters – there’s loads of ways to
extend and adapt this activity! Have fun making shiny Christmas cards!
